Romania's Government cancels decision to increase wages in public finance institutions

04 November 2015

The Government has decided to cancel the measure announced on Friday, which provided that the salaries of 5,700 employees within the Tax Agency ANAF and the Finance Ministry would increase on average by 22%.

The Government issued yesterday an emergency ordinance which canceled the increase. Tens of thousands of employees of local financial departments went on strike on Tuesday morning, to protest against the Government's decision to increase the salaries only in the central financial departments. Basically the measure would have applied only to employees of central financial institutions, leaving those working in local agencies apart.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta first reacted by saying to those who went on strike that public clerks would receive salary increases if they showed more responsibility and competence, reports local Profit.ro. However the Government later decided to cancel the measure, so that the salary increase would not take place.
