Embassies react to the Romanian Parliament's vote on PM prosecution

10 June 2015

Several more vocal embassies to Romania released statements on June 9 after the Parliament vote helped Prime Minister Victor Ponta keep his immunity while facing corruption charges.

The Netherlands Embassy to Bucharest said the country strongly believes that all people are equal before the law: “The recent evolutions in the Parliament highlight broader issues related to attitudes towards justice and corruption in Romania.”

The US Embassy also said that the law should apply equally to all, and that "any allegations of violations of the law by government officials should be investigated fully and without interference.”

The UK Embassy said it acknowledged the importance of the anti-corruption fight in Romania and the need for judicial institutions to act impartially and independently.
