Deposits in banks up 1.2% in May in Romania

Household and firms deposits in banks amounted to EUR 42.08 billion at the end of May, up 1.2 percent from the previous month, and by 2.7 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the National Bank of Romania (BNR).

The population's deposits increased by 0.3 percent in May, while the companies' deposits rose with 4.5 percent, compared to the previous month. In foreign currency, the deposits rose by 1.2 percent for individuals, but fell 3.1 percent for firms. Compared to May last year, the population's foreign currency deposits rose by 1.7 percent, but dropped to 10.9 percent for companies.

Non-governmental loans reached EUR 50.50 billion, up 1.5 percent compared to the previous month, and 2.2 percent higher than the end of May 2010.

The balance of credits in RON rose with 0.8 percent for the population compared to April, and kept the same level for companies, while the ones in foreign currency rose by 2.5 percent and 1.9 percent, respectivelly.

Compared with May 2010, the balance of loans in RON accessed by individuals fell by 6.5 percent, but rose by 6.9 percent for companies, while the balance of credits in foreign currency rose by 2.8 percent and 4 percent.
