There were 6.4 million subscribers to paid audiovisual programs retransmission services in Romania in 2013, a growth of 5.7 percent on the previous year. At the end of 2013, more than 85 percent of the Romanian households had TV program retransmission services, according to the data reported by the providers, processed and published by communication authority ANCOM.

Of the 6.4 million subscribers, 4.1 million had a cable TV subscription via cable networks, up 8.7 percent on the year before, while 2.2 million were Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite television subscribers. This segment was slightly down – 0.2 percent year-on-year.

Only 56,000 received TV programs over the IP technology, but there was a 49 percent increase on this segment.

Over half of TV services subscribers were residing in the urban area end – 2013 – 62 percent, while 81 percent were subscribers to cable networks. In the rural area, 61 percent of the rural users were subscribers to satellite DTH networks.

Romania has a population of 20 million inhabitants according to the 2011 census data.
