Who is Sorin Cimpeanu, Romania’s interim Prime Minister?

05 November 2015

Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis announced on November 5 that he appointed Education Minister Sorin Cimpeanu as interim Prime Minister after Victor Ponta’s resignation.

Sorin Cimpeanu was born on April 18, 1968. He graduated Sf. Sava National College in Bucharest in 1986, and has an engineer diploma from the Faculty of Land Reclamation and Environmental Engineering within the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest (USAMV) from 1991. He also has a Ph.D. from the same faculty.

He started his professional career in 1991, as engineer projector at the Institute for Studies and Design for Land Reclamation (ISPIF). He also worked as coordinator of the Peris-Ilfov Experimental Centre within USAMV Bucharest (1992-1999), expert coordinator at the Ministry of Education and Research - the National Centre for Leonardo da Vinci European program (2000-2003), and expert coordinator at the Ministry of Education - Partnership of Universities with the Social Economic Environment APART (2003-2004).

Between 2004 and 2008, he was deputy dean at USAVM - the Faculty of Land Reclamation and Environmental Engineering. From 2008, he became the faculty’s dean and, at present, he is rector at USAMV Bucharest.

He has been PhD Supervisor at USAMV since 2006. Moreover, since 2012, he has also been a corresponding member of the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania, corresponding member of Gheorghe Ionescu Sisesti Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, and Secretary General at the National Council for Attesting Titles, Diplomas and University Certificates (CNATDCU).

Cimpeanu is also president of the Consortium of Universities of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine - Life sciences in Romania, and president of the National Council of Rectors in Romania.

He was appointed Ministry of Education in December last year, being named for this position by the Conservative Party (PC) led by Agriculture Minister Daniel Constantin. He is one of the few members of the former Victor Ponta cabinet who is not a party member, which probably weighed in Iohannis' decision to appoint him as interim PM.
