Social Democrats want to increase salaries for all public employees in Romania by 10%

10 November 2015

Romania’s biggest political party by the number of seats in the Parliament, the Social Democratic Party (PSD), wants to increase the wages of all state employees by 10%, starting December 1, 2015.

PSD has already asked the Parliament to approve this increase together with the Government’s Emergency Ordinance which provided the 25% increase of the salaries in the public healthcare system. The Chamber of Deputies will vote on this amendment on Wednesday, November 11.

The author of this amendment, PSD deputy Adrian Solomon, said that the main reason PSD supported this salary increase was that the public wages’ law, which would have included this raise, couldn’t be approved in due time because of the current political situation, according to Hotnews.ro.

Solomon said the estimated impact of this increase on next year’s state budget would be about EUR 335-405 million.

The National Liberal Party (PNL) opposes this amendment arguing that the impact on the budget would be higher, of close to EUR 500 million, together with the already approved salary increases in the healthcare system and education, it would increase the budget deficit for next year by about 0.7% of the GDP.
