Exports of timber from Romania increased tenfold between 1990 and 2013, from EUR 71.83 million to EUR 721.3 million.

Romanian timber exports also almost doubled between 2008 and 2013, when they posted a growth of 80%, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics, cited by Evz.ro.

The scandal involving illegal restitution of forests has brought to attention the issue of illegal logging, which results in timber exports. A new warrant was issued last week for MP Ioan Adam, in the case of the illegal restitution of forests in the Bacau County. In this case former deputy Viorel Hrebenciuc and his son, Andrei, together with Platin Sturdza, were already taken in custody.
