Romanian SocDem leader gets new warning from EC VP Timmermans at PES congress

25 February 2019

After a speech in front of the Party of European Socialists (PES), in Madrid, on Friday, Romanian Social Democrat (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea implied that he ironed out the disagreements with Frans Timmermans, first vice-president of the European Commission (EC), a constant critic of the deviations from the rule of law in Romania.

"We had an excellent and interesting discussion with Sergei [Stanishev, PES President], with Frans [Timmermans, PES candidate for EC president] and I proposed solutions for better communication. I remain open, and hope we have better communication," the PSD leader said, according to Hotnews.ro.

Timmermans also mentioned his meeting with Liviu Dragnea in his speech at the PES Convention on Saturday, but the nuances were different, according to G4Media.ro.

“I told him: Liviu, if you want to be part of this family, you have to observe our fundamental values. And Liviu said he would. We will have discussions on this topic in the coming weeks but can’t make any compromises in this area. This is a red line for our organization, this is a red line for Europe,” Timmermans said.

Meanwhile, in his speech at PES, Dragnea spoke about the abuse of power done by right-wing parties that, in the case of Romania, used the state's power institutions. "We are talking about the future of Europe, mine, yours, our children’s, our parents’. Together with sister parties, we must restore justice,” Dragnea called.
