Romania gives pupils an apple a day; ‘fruits in schools’ program costs EUR 13.4 mln
Children up to the 8th grade will get an apple on each school day for 93 days starting November 1st. This translates into 158 million apples.
The entire program also includes trips to orchards and to vegetables farms, as well as educational activities teaching children about a healthy diet based on fruits and vegetables.
After the agriculture ministry will decide on quality issues about the apples which will be distributed, each county will organize bids to get apple suppliers for the schools within the county.
The program is similar to an existing one, called 'milk and croissant' (in Romanian: Cornul si laptele), which started out during the Social Democratic Party (PSD) ruling between 2000-2004.
