Only 17% of anticorruption cases in Romania came from internal notifications

27 November 2014

Only 17% of the cases registered at the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) in 2014 were based on internal notifications from the intelligence services, the media, or journalistic investigations, while most of the referrals came from citizens and public institutions, said DNA chief prosecutor Laura Codruţa Kovesi.

"Although there is a strong perception about the large involvement of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) in the activity of DNA, we found out that only 17% of the cases recorded this year were based on internal notifications based on information from the media, journalistic investigations or intelligence services, unlike in 2010, when 19% of cases were based on this method of referral," said Kovesi, cited by local Agerpres.

The number of notifications received from citizens increased by about 63% compared to the previous years, which shows confidence people have in the DNA, Kovesi added.
