Update: King Charles III’s visit to Romania will be private, British ambassador says

30 May 2023

Update: According to the Romanian president's agenda, Klaus Iohannis will welcome King Charles III at the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest this Friday, June 2. The two will have face-to-face talks followed by a meeting with state authorities and representatives of the civil society and the Diplomatic Corps. News.ro reported that the British monarch will also travel to his residence in Viscri.

Initial story: King Charles III will come to Romania on a private visit, British ambassador Andrew Noble told local news agency Agerpres. However, he will meet with president Klaus Iohannis as a gesture of courtesy.

According to the British diplomat, this will be the first visit of a British monarch to Romania. But, just as in the case of previous visits as Prince of Wales, this will also be a private visit.

"We understand what a private visit means: as always, he will meet the president as a courtesy gesture. After going to Cotroceni [Palace], the rest of the visit will be private," ambassador Noble said without offering specific details.

"I don't want to give details because I want it to be as quiet and discreet as possible for the King. One of the great advantages of Romania is its tranquility, so his private visits here will be respected as such," Andrew Noble explained.

The local media announced earlier this month that King Charles III would travel to Romania on June 2. The information was later confirmed by prime minister Nicolae Ciuca, who said the British monarch would also meet with president Klaus Iohannis.

King Charles is connected to Romania by his deep love for Transylvania, a region he has visited on many occasions in the last 20 years. His most recent visit to Romania was at the end of May 2022, when he visited a Ukrainian refugee center in Bucharest and launched a forest landscape restoration project.
