Irish Shaun Davey brings “Voices from the Merry Cemetery” on Bucharest stage this November
The concert has been presented before in Romania, in the summer of 2010, at the Merry Cemetery in Romania, while the Irish premiere took place in November last year.
Shaun Davey is one of Irelands’ leading professional composers, and his first concert work in 1980, “The Brendan Voyage”, for Uilleann pipes and orchestra, was the first time an Irish traditional musician played with a classical orchestra. The Merry Cemetery is located in the Romanian village of Sapanta and attracts annually about 200,000 tourists. The cemetery’s name stems from the colorful crosses and the satirical poetry that is written on them. After the cross is carved, it is usually painted in blue, the so-called “Blue Sapanta”.
