How popular is cycling in Romania?

22 February 2016

Besides being a healthy and fun sport, cycling is also a way to help reduce pollution in large cities. But how popular is this sport in Romania?

Data from local Preda Publishing shows that 30% of Romania’s population has a bike at home, nearly half of them having one for more than five years.

However, only 5.2% of Romanians see cycling as a daily way of transport, compared to 31.2% in the Netherlands, and 19% in Denmark.

Unfortunately, the low number of Romanians who see cycling as a way of transport might be linked to the poor bike infrastructure in the country. For example, Bucharest has only 5.97 km of bike lanes.

The longest bike lane in Romania, which measures 37 km, starts from Timisoara and ends near the border with Serbia.
