How much water does Romania use a year?

26 September 2014

Romania used more water in 2013 than the year before, and less than half of it went to individual consumers, while the rest, to agriculture and industry.

The total volume of water distributed to consumers in Romania in 2013 was 1.4 billion cubic meters, some 15% higher compared to the previous year. This is the equivalent of 594,300 Olympic size swimming pools, as one Olympic size swimming pool generically has 2,500 cubic meters of water.

More than 608 million cubic meters of water were distributed to the population, via the public water supply system. The rest of the water was used in agriculture, industry and other activities, according to data published by the National Statistics Institute (INS).

Almost 12.35 million Romanians were connected to the public water supply system, at the end of 2013, up by 243,000 compared to the end of 2012. This represents 62% of Romania’s population. About 83% of the urban population benefits from public water supply, while in the rural areas the percentage is lower than 27%.
