Mountain rescuers in Sibiu county, Romania, warned that avalanches are likely to occur in the coming period in the Balea Lake area in the Fagaras mountains, where the snow layer is around three meters deep in places.

“Even if spring is coming slowly to the lowlands of the county, in the mountains it is still definitely winter: the snow layer is increasing consistently, getting up to 3 meters in areas at over 2,000 meters altitude, and is stabilizing, which attracts more and more tourists who want to take part in winter sports,” said Adrian David, chief of the mountain rescuers in Sibiu, quoted by Mediafax newswire.

According to him, the period between end-February and mid-April is the most dangerous for avalanches, so tourists going up to Balea Lake should be equipped with avalanche rescue equipment, including electronic transmitter and a shovel for the snow.
