Former Romanian PM Ungureanu to run for EP elections head of party list, but does not intend to hold MEP position

24 March 2014

Former Prime Minister Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu, who led the Romanian government for a short period in 2012, will be the first on Forta Civica party’s list of candidates for this year’s elections for the European Parliament. He will run for a seat of Member of the European Parliament, but does not intend to actually occupy the MEP seat, as he will also run for president in Romania.

“I open this list to guarantee the names of those occupying the following positions on the list. All counties are represented. At the end of the electoral competition, I will give my place to another party member on the list. It’s a list that includes our party’s best and most serious members,” said Ungureanu, who is also president of the Forta Civica party.

He added that the list will be submitted to the Central Electoral Bureau this Tuesday, together with the 200,000 signatures the party has collected.

Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu is Forta Civica’s candidate for this year’s Presidential elections. According to him, following the decision to open the party’s list for the European Parliament elections, “the presidential candidate status will not change”.

Romania will organize the elections for the European Parliament on May 25 this year. All in all, 751 MEPs from all member states will be elected, and Romania will send 32 representatives to Brussels this year.
