European Commission starts infringement against Romania on breach of EU laws on public acquisitions for road work

21 June 2013

The European Commission started the infringement procedures against Romania for having breached the EU directives in the public acquisitions for revamping a road connecting Crasna and Iasi. The bid organized by the Romanian highways company followed a local legislation which was later found to be incompatible with European norms for public acquisitions.

The participation announcement was missing essential information, while bidders were deprived of their full right to an appeal, according to the European Commission. Thus the public acquisitions breached the EU directives 2004/18/CE and 89/665/CEE.

In case Romania does not take measures to end breaching the EU directives within two months, the Commission can decide to notify the Court of Justice.
