Payments by Visa cards rose by 9% in Romania in the last fiscal year. They reached EUR 21 billion while the daily card payments surpassed EUR 10 million, according to a statement from Visa Europe.

Romanians carried out about 10 million POS transactions every month, said Catalin Cretu, regional director for Romania, Croatia and Slovenia within Visa Europe.

The number of issued cards in Romania increased by 2.6% in 2014, reaching 7.3 million units.

More banks decided that the newly issued cards should have the contactless technology incorporated. This proved to be a good decision, says Cretu, as in only a few months, the POS transactions tripled and exceeded EUR 1 million per month.
