Romanians trust the Firefighters, the emergency rescue service SMURD and the Army. What are the least trusted institutions?

24 December 2014

The institutions Romanians trust the most are the Fire Department, the Army, the emergency rescue service SMURD, the Church, the EU, the Gendarmerie and the diaspora, according to a recent report of IRES.

A large number of Romanians, namely 90%, have confidence and great confidence in the Fire Department, this institution being followed in the top by the emergency rescue service SMURD – 88% and the Army – with 81%.

The Anticorruption Department DNA and the Church come next in the trust ranking, 66% of Romanians saying they have confidence and great confidence in these two institutions. The top is completed by the European Union, the Gendarmerie, the Romanian Intelligence Service and the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT). Over half of Romanians have confidence and great confidence in the Central Bank BNR, in Justice and in the Romanian school.

By contrast, only 9% of Romanians have confidence and great confidence in the Parliament, 89% saying they have little and very little confidence in this institution. When it comes to political parties, only 10% of Romanians say they trust them.

IRES also introduced, for the first time, diaspora and Facebook in this ranking, two of the main 'characters' of this year’s Presidential elections. 60% of Romanians have confidence and great confidence in the diaspora, while a lower percentage, namely 42%, trust Facebook.

The survey was conducted between December 18 and December 19 on a sample of 1,147 respondents.
