Romanian Sorin Ducaru appointed Assistant to NATO Secretary General for emerging security risks

23 May 2013

Romania's Ambassador to NATO Sorin Ducaru (in picture) has been appointed as Assistant to the NATO Secretary General for Emerging Security Risks. Romania's Foreign Ministry informed local news agency Mediafax of the appointment, announced by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, at the same time welcoming the news.

Ducaru is a career diplomat who has worked with Romania's Foreign Ministry for 20 years. His experience includes work in the Department of Policy Analysis as advisor to the Minister and the Foreign Ministry spokesman and NATO Director of the Ministry. He has served as Romania's ambassador to the UN, ambassador to the US and as Permanent Representative to NATO.

Ducaru will take over his new position in October this year, according to the Foreign Ministry. The number of Assistants to the Secretary General is less than the number of NATO member states, thus selection for the posts is via a competitive process.

The emerging security risks division was started in 2010 to respond to the changing global security challenges of the 21st Century. The NATO division's responsibilities include cyber defense issues, energy security, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the fight against terrorism and strategic analysis capabilities of the Alliance.
