Romania's sole salt producer, Salrom, doubled its gross profit last year, to EUR 5.2 million, while turnover was up 13 percent, to EUR 66.1 million, after the biggest annual production for the last five years.

More than a quarter of the salt production went to exports, which counterbalanced the shrinking demand from the local chemical sector, Salrom's largest client. Last year, Salrom extracted over 2.4 million tonnes of salt, a record annual quantity for the last five years.

The company, which uses its salt mines for tourism as well, welcomed one million tourists to its mines last year. Salt mine tourism is one of the areas where Salrom plans to grow this year, while also expanding international activity.

Salrom runs seven salt mines in Slănic Prahova, Ocna Mureş, Praid, Ocna Dej, Râmnicu Vâlcea, Târgu-Ocna and Cacica. It also runs warehouses in Bucharest, Craiova, Timişoara, Bacău, Dej.
