Romanian president booed during speech in Parliament
Basescu spoke in front of the Parliament on Wednesday, in a half empty room, as the opposition MPs did not attend the speech. The opposition started a parliamentary strike just before a new Government was sworn in Romania, earlier in February.
“Our protest results from the attitude of the current power, which doesn’t wish to acknowledge the major character of the public discontent,” according to the Social Union Party (USL) leader Crin Antonescu.
This came soon after two weeks of street protests in downtown Bucharest in January, when protesters angrily called for Basescu's resignation and the formation of a new Government.
