Romania returns to normal after the blizzard, roads and Black Sea ports reopened

30 December 2014

The most important roads in Romania which were closed on Monday, because of the blizzard were reopened on Tuesday, December 30. The main Romanian Black Sea ports were also reopened.

The heavy snowfalls and especially the strong winds paralyzed the south-eastern part of Romania. Several counties were under code red for extreme blizzard on Monday. The blizzard stopped on Monday evening and by Tuesday morning the activity returned to normal in most of Romania.

The A2 highway which connects Romania’s capital Bucharest to the Black Sea port of Constanta was opened for traffic on Tuesday morning, after it had been closed on Monday due to the blizzard.

The DN2 national road, which connects the capital to the region of Moldova, was also reopened for traffic. The road had been closed on Monday between Urziceni and Adjud due to snowfall and blizzard which made it unsuitable for traffic.

Most national roads were reopened, including the DN67C which is the only road for tourists who want to get to the mountain resort of Ranca, in Gorj county. DN67C is also known as Transalpina and is the highest road in Romania. Hwever, the road is closed between Ranca and Sebes, as its highest portion is covered by snow for most of the winter.

There are still a few secondary national roads closed in Buzau, Braila, Vrancea and Tulcea counties, which were among the worst hit by the blizzard. Several trains were also cancelled on Tuesday.
