Only one third of the high school students in their final year who took the baccalaureate exam in the special session last week passed it, according to data from the country's Education Ministry. Almost 900 students took the exam last week, which was organized for students taking part in international competitions on different topics, as well as for those who are taking part in sports competitions.

These candidates, competing in international and national academic competitions, are supposed to be among the smartest high school graduates taking the exam. However, most of the students who signed up for this exam session were involved in sports competitions, with only 45 competing for academic prizes.

The Romanian Olympics and Sports Committee was taken by surprise by the high number of candidates and the low pass rate, as only 108 athletes with the appropriate age to take the test were part of the committee.

The regular Baccalaureate exam will take place between June 11 and July 6 this year.
