Moldova’s place is in the European Union, Romanian PM says

21 June 2023

Prime minister Marcel Ciolacu reaffirmed Romania's support for the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union during a recent meeting with president Maia Sandu, part of his working visit to Chișinău.

"The place of the Republic of Moldova is in the European Union! Today, in Chișinău, during the meeting with the president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, I reiterated Romania's support for this common goal. I am convinced that the negotiations for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union will begin very soon! The Republic of Moldova can count on Romania!" said Marcel Ciolacu on his Facebook page.

The prime minister of the Republic of Moldova, Dorin Recean, thanked Romania for the assistance provided. He mentioned that help came in the form of promoting the European integration of his country, but also in economic and social terms, according to Euronews.

"Romania, together with the European Union, has helped us a lot in putting those individuals and companies that work to destabilize the statehood of the Republic of Moldova on the sanctions list,” Recean said during a joint press conference with Romanian PM Marcel Ciolacu.

He also said that the same thing happened with those "who attempt to wage Russia’s hybrid war in the Republic of Moldova.”

Former Liberal PM and now president of the senate Nicolae Ciucă is also in Chișinău, alongside Ciolacu. He expressed his hope that the Republic of Moldova will receive a decision to start negotiations for accession to the European Union, describing the efforts made by Romania’s neighboring country as "a beautiful dream that will soon become a reality." He also reiterated Romania's support in this endeavor.
