26 September 2012

Romanian MEP Monica Macovei (in picture), a former Justice Minister, won an award from The Parliament Magazine for Justice and Civilian Liberties for her activity in the European Parliament. She was the only Romanian MEP to get an award from the magazine during the awards ceremony in Brussels on Tuesday evening (September 25 ).

According to the magazine, the MEP, a member of the opposition Democrat Liberal Party (PDL) in Romania, made it “her mission to reform the judicial system in Romania.”

The magazine goes on: “In 2011, she made 41 speeches on transparency and anti-corruption in the EU, and also condemned human rights violations and clashes all around the world (Pakistan, Tunisia, Belarus, Egypt, Thailand, Congo, Madagascar, Guantanamo). She also signed the motion for a resolution on the EU's efforts to combat corruption and co-signed around 40 other joint motions in 2011.”

Macovei was up against Jan Philipp Albrecht from Germany and Sophia in ‘t Veld, of the Netherlands, who were also shortlisted for this category.

“This prize once again confirms that what I have done in Romania for reforming justice was correct and was appreciated. […] This prize encourages me to continue European level projects and support the legitimate state in my country and anywhere else in the world,” said Macovei upon receiving the awards.
