First online TV station dedicated to gipsies, launched in Romania

09 April 2014

The first online TV for Roma was launched in Romania earlier this week, and its founders hope to enter cable networks as well in the following months. The online station, called Gipsy Reality, was launched in Cluj – Napoca and required EUR 40,000 in investments.

The founder Aurel Pascu, who is also a Roma party leader in the region of Transylvania, said one of the shows will be in Romani language. The editorial program will include debates on education, arts, economy, as well as news, and features on Roma traditions, with shows scheduled for every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday on Gipsy Media's online platform.

“We aim to present another image of Roma, coming from within the ethnicity, and their views on the current problems faced by the Romanian society,” said Pascu, quoted by Romanian media.

The TV station would hire journalism students and graduates of Roma ethnicity from the University in Cluj – Napoca.
