First five foreign investment source countries bring 65% of FDI in Romania

The Netherlands was the main country of origin for foreign investments in Romania at the end of last year, reaching investments of EUR 10.9 billion – or 20 percent of the total investments directed towards Romania, according to the Romanian Central Bank. It was followed by Austria, with 17.8 percent of investments and EUR 9.3 billion. Germany came third, with EUR 6.3 billion and France, fourth, with EUR 4.3 billion. Greece came fifth with EUR 3 billion in investments and 5.7 percent of the total. These first five countries brought around 65 percent of the total foreign direct investments in the country.

Greenfield investments made only 1.1 percent of the investments, with only EUR 46 million. Mergers and acquisitions covered EUR 93 million – around 2.3 percent of participation.

Around half of the foreign direct investments were recorded in the industry segment – EUR 23 billion. Trade accounted for EUR 6.5 billion while IT&C, for EUR 3 billion.
