European Commission condemns France over repatriation of Roma
“This is a situation I thought Europe would not have to witness again after the second world war,” said Viviane Reding, referring to Nazi Germany’s persecution of gypsies. José Manuel Barroso, the Commission president, supported this view. The EC gave France an infringement warning over this situation.
On the other side, France expressed its astonishment over the criticism.
The European Commission has said France had broken EU law on the free movement of people when repatriating about 8,000 Roma this year to Romania and Bulgaria.
