Competition Council report: Drug market up four fold in Romania over nine years

21 October 2011

Romania's drug market went up four fold from 2000 to 2009, reaching a value of around EUR 1.9 billion, according to a report from the Competition Council. The local drug market reached EUR 2.3 billion in 2010.

“Although the Romanian market hosts an important number of players, the tendency on this market was towards concentration, with the first 20 companies controlling 78 percent of the market. This was mainly due to mergers and acquisitions on an international level,” according to the Competition Council's report.

The traditional drug distribution system continues to be used in Romania - producers are distributing their products through one or several distributors, based on distribution contracts or on certain general conditions accepted by distributors. “The main feature of this system is the transfer of the property right over the products at the moment the producer is delivering them to the distributor, the last one being free to choose its clients and to set the resale price, taking into account the existing regulations and supporting all the commercial and financial risks arising from this operation,” according to the report.
