Bucharest hosts Romania’s largest Japanese festival this May

25 February 2015

For two days, Bucharest will turn into the European capital of Japanese culture, when it will host the largest event of this kind in Romania – Otaku Festival.

The event takes places on May 9 and May 10 at the Romanian-American University in Bucharest.

The festival will gather artists and participants from over 15 countries, including the most well-known international cosplay (costume play) artists from Europe, Asia and the US.

For the first time in Europe, this year’s edition of the event will be organised in partnership with Anime Matsuri, one of the largest conventions in the US.

The organizers hope Otaku Festival will attract 5,000 visitors.

The festival’s program includes 80 workshops, presentations and other interactive activities. Visitors will find old school games, animation series and comic books, the latest gaming titles, including games produced by independent studios, as well as some of the most popular series and comic books today.

Otaku Festival is also based on several themes, with four areas of activity: Otaku Pop-Culture (manga, anime, cosplay, figurines, video games, music, fashion, cinema), Independent Culture (artists, video games, music, magazines and independent comic books), Modern Culture (research and education, auto industry, technology, tourism) and Traditional Culture (lifestyle, literature, martial arts, culinary arts).

Tickets can be purchased online here. A two-day pass costs RON 40 (EUR 9), while a one-day ticket is RON 25 (over EUR 5). Tickets purchased on site will cost RON 60 (EUR 14) and RON 30 (Some EUR 7) respectively.
