A total of 78% of Romanians surveyed have bought presents for Valentine’s Day, a study done by marketing research firm 4Service Group Romania revealed. Still, only 1 in 100 plan to spend more than EUR 100 for the present.

The study found that 48% of the respondents buy presents for their husband or wife, and 40% for their boyfriend or girlfriend. Some of the respondents saw Valentine’s Day as a name day and 6.5% said they would buy presents for children or parents.

Almost 30% of the respondents planned to purchase gifts priced between RON 150 (EUR 31) and RON 250 (EUR 52), while 26.5% did not want to spend more than RON 50 (a little more than EUR 10) – RON 100 (EUR 21).

Furthermore, 1 in 5 of those surveyed budgeted in between RON 250 (EUR 53) and RON 450 (EUR 95) for the Valentine’s Day gift, while 11.8% will spend less than RON 50. Only 1 in 100 respondents was willing to spend in between RON 450 and RON 900 (EUR 190) for the Valentine’s Day gift, the study showed.

The study also showed than over a third of those surveyed celebrate Valentine’s Day yearly, 33% do not celebrate at all, and 31% celebrate only sometimes. This happens because 47% of those surveyed think the celebration is a good opportunity to show their love and spend quality time with their partner, while 27.7% view the celebration as only a US import.

More than 19% of the respondents did not think that Valentine’s Day was a special day and preferred the local equivalent Dragobete, while 2.3% viewed the celebration as being only for the young.

Almost 45% of those surveyed thought that a restaurant is the best place to have a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner, 42.5% preferred the intimacy of their homes, while 4.6% were ready to mark Valentine’s Day with a city break. Half (50.8%) of those spending February 14 in the city expect to encounter special services in restaurants or stores, the study showed.
