Which hypermarkets and supermarkets are open on Christmas and New Year’s Day?

23 December 2015

Most hypermarkets and supermarkets in Romania will be closed on Christmas Day (December 25) and on New Year’s Day (January 1).

However, if you have forgotten to buy something for the Christmas dinner, you should know that there are a few exceptions.

The Auchan hypermarket in the AFI Cotroceni mall will be open on Christmas Day and January 1 (between 14:00 and 23:30) as the mall stays open on those days. The Cora hypermarket in AFI Ploiesti will also be open on December 25 and January 1 (from 14:00 to 22:00).

The Mega Image supermarket in Bucuresti Mall (Vitan) is also open on Christmas Day, between 14:00 and 21:00, but not on January 1.

Be aware that most retailers will have shorter opening hours on December 24, December 26 and December 31. However, between December 27 and December 30 and starting January 2, most retailers will have regular schedules.

The Lidl supermarkets are the only supermarkets in Romania that will be closed both on December 25 and December 26, as the chain’s management has decided to grant its employees two days off for Christmas.
