University says Romanian city mayor, guilty of plagiarism in Ph.D thesis

23 December 2014

The University of Bucharest recently confirmed that Olguta Vasilescu, the mayor of Craiova, plagiarized in her Ph.D thesis. The University's Ethics Committee published an expertise report on the plagiarism suspicion over the mayor's Ph.D thesis. The report showed that she "took identical or nearly identical formulations of works that do not belong to her, without using quotation marks."

The report presents an analysis of Vasilescu's Ph.D thesis "Vilfredo Pareto's contribution to the development of modern sociology", developed under the coordination of professor Dumitru Otovescu, with regard to the rules of good scientific practice in academic papers.

Craiova mayor's Ph.D paper presents "problematic content regarding reference to the rules of good practice in scientific authorship" including phrases without complete information on the source, according to the report.
