Romania’s ballet star Alina Cojocaru dances in Marguerite and Armand premiere on home stage

21 April 2015

Internationally acclaimed Romanian ballerina Alina Cojocaru will be back on the National Opera stage in Bucharest for the premiere of three choreographic works next weekend.

She will perform in the Marguerite and Armand show, in the leading Marguerite role. The show is choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton. Two more shows will be included in the performance: Classical Symphony and Petite Mort and shows, choreographed by Yuri Possokhov and Jiri Kylian, respectively.

The show including the three pieces will premiere on April 25 at the National Opera. Further representations will be held on April 26, 29, and May 3, 10 and 13.

Marguerite and Armand is a one-act ballet, inspired by „The Lady of Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas II, on music by Franz Liszt.

By depicting love stories, the three compositions represent different approaches to this subject, as each of the three choreographers translated his own style and concepts into the dancers’ moves, according to the National Opera in Bucharest.

In 1963, Sir Frederick Ashton, one of the most renowned choreographers of the twentieth century, known as ”the father of English ballet”, created his work ”Marguerite and Armand.”
