Almost 1,500 young Romanians receive DiscoverEU free travel passes to explore Europe

15 May 2023

Almost 1,500 young Romanians are among the DiscoverEU travel pass winners announced late last week.

According to the European Commission's Representation in Romania, a total of 145,657 18-year-olds applied for one of the 35,324 travel permits made available in the March 2023 application round.

Selected candidates will travel to Europe individually or in groups of up to 5 people between June 15, 2023, and September 30, 2024. They will travel by train, but exceptions are made so that young people living on islands or remote areas can also participate.

This round of applications is part of the Erasmus+ program and saw more sustained interest because 2022 was the European Year of Youth. In this round, applications were accepted from young citizens born between July 1, 2004, and June 30, 2005, from EU member states, as well as from Erasmus+ associated countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey).

Up to now, a total of over 9,700 young Romanians have been selected to receive free tickets to travel around Europe.
