Three Romanians injured in Barcelona terror attack

18 August 2017

Three Romanian citizens have been injured in the Barcelona terrorist attack of August 17, the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) said. All of them have been admitted to the hospital and were said to be in stable condition.

Update: Only one of the injured Romanians was still admitted to the hospital on August 18, MAE announced.

The process of identifying the victims of the attack is underway and MAE will release any new information as it receives it from the Spanish authorities, the ministry said.

The attack saw a van drive into the crowds on the tourist-filled La Rambla street in Barcelona. So far, 13 are reported dead and 100 injured. Citizens of 18 countries are among the victims, El Pais reported.

The injured Romanians are two men, aged 32 and 42, while the third victim is believed to be a woman, Mediafax reported. Of the two men, one was in the Catalan capital as a tourist.

“I understood one of them, who was a tourist in Barcelona, has multiple fractures but [e.n. the situation] is under control. Regarding the second Romanian injured in Barcelona, I understood he did not want to say his name because he is in a good condition and he did not want to worry his family back home,” Daniel Tecu, the president of the Federation of Romanian Associations in Europe, told Mediafax.

Hours after the Barcelona attack, the coastal city of Cambrils, around 120 km from Barcelona, was also hit by a vehicle attack. Seven people were injured and five suspects were killed here as they were attempting to replicate the Barcelona attack. Three suspects have been arrested so far in connection to the attacks, according to El Pais.
