A powerful fire broke at a shoe factory in Jilava near Bucharest, on Monday morning, June 6. One of the firefighters who went to the site to battle the flames died as a wall crushed him during the intervention.

The fire was reported around 7:30 AM as the flames spread to about 2,000 sqm of production lines and warehouses. Heavy black smoke rose from the burning factory, which stored big quantities of flammable materials.

A dozen fire trucks intervened to contain the fire. A firefighter died during the intervention, as an outer wall fell on him. The prosecutors started a criminal investigation on the circumstances of the firefighter’s death.

The shoe factory that burned was owned by an Italian investor. The damages may amount to several million euro.

The owner had a property insurance on the factory but this didn’t also cover the fire risk, which means that he will only be marginally compensated, according to sources quoted by local Profit.ro.
