A team of Romanian doctors from the Colentina hospital in Bucharest got the gold medal at the Geneva Inventions Show for creating a simulator meant to teach resident doctors and urology specialists how to perform the less invasive surgery to remove kidney stones.

The simulator created by medical doctors Victor Cauni, Cristian Persu and Felix Voinea allows young doctors to practice this type of surgery, according to Mediafax newswire.

The simulator in fact mimics a segment of the human body, with all tissues and organs, allowing young doctors to practice very close to reality. “These minimally invasive surgeries are very delicate and involve a big learning curve, but the device shortens this curve,” explained Dr. Victor Cauni, head of Urology at the Colentina Hospital.

The new device replaces the current simulations done by young doctors on fruits – apples or pears.
