Romania needs to pay GDF Suez damages of EUR 66 million

05 May 2015

Romania’s energy regulation agency ANRE needs to pay energy group GDF Suez damages of EUR 66 million, following a Bucharest Court of Appeal decision.

The Court found that the Economy Ministry didn’t have an even practice on the distribution of natural gas from domestic production, reports local Digi24. This is much cheaper compared to imported gas.

GDF Suez claimed that it had to import more expensive gas, after the state distributed almost the entire domestic natural gas production to Interagro Group, owned by businessman Ion Niculae. ANRE can appeal the decision at the Supreme Court.

The Directorate for Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) has already launched an investigation, which involves the former Economy Minister Adriean Videanu. They check how Ion Niculae’s plants have received gas at subsidized prices.
