People sentenced with abuse of office, conflict of interest or embezzlement will lose all the wealth acquired during the last five years before the court's decision if they had obtained material benefits through their deeds and if they are sentenced to at least four years in prison.

This is provided by a new draft law the Government approved on Friday, mirroring EU legislation, reports local News.ro.

Prosecutors should prove in court that the goods come from illegal deeds. The court’s conviction may also be based on the disproportion between the legal income and the person's wealth.

The bill transposes into Romanian legislation the European directive on extended confiscation. The draft law also introduces provisions on the operation of the National Agency for the Management of Seized Goods (ANABI).
