Tour operator: Facebook influences the Romanians’ holiday choices

14 December 2016

It’s no novelty that social media has grown to be an influencing factor in people’s lives, especially when it comes to choosing a holiday destination.

A study from the largest online tour operator in Romania, Paravion, shows that some 45% of urban Romanians aged up to 34, with high and medium studies, plan their holidays based on the photos or impressions their friends post on Facebook.

With a share of about 60%, the urban Romanian women active on Facebook represent the category most influenced by social networks in choosing holiday destinations.

A quarter of Romanian women aged 25-34 who are active on Facebook, married or in a relationship, are also the most active in the tourism & leisure area. They prefer romantic destinations such as Paris and Prague, but also the sunny, ones such as Barcelona, Rome, or the Greek islands.

The urban men with income above average represent 30% of those who are interested in travel topics on social networks. Of these, those aged between 25 and 34 are the most likely to plan their holidays based on newsfeed on Facebook.

However, their holiday preferences are different from that of women, with destinations such as the ski resorts in the Alps at the top of their preferences list.

“When it comes to selecting holiday destinations, the trends have changed in recent years among Romanians. The classic tourists, who were entering travel agencies to ask for references or catalogs are starting to disappear, being replaced by a new generation of tourists, who take information from the social networks,” said Remus Visan, general manager Paravion.

The tour operator’s representatives believe that this trend will continue to grow in the coming years, given the increased number of social network users.
