Monarchy vs. republic: what do Romanians prefer?

18 December 2014

In case a referendum would be organized with the option to choose between republic and monarchy, 58.2% of Romanians would remain loyal to the republican option, while 20.4% would vote for monarchy, according to a recent survey conducted by Inscop.

On age categories, half of those aged between 18 and 30 would choose the republic, the percentage growing to almost 60% for those aged between 31 and 50 and to over 61% in the case of those aged over 50.

When it comes to monarchy, 21.4% of Romanians aged between 18 and 30 would choose this form of government, this also being the choice for almost 19% of those aged between 31 and 50 and 20.9% of people aged over 50.

Around 30% of Romanians believe that it would have been better if the monarchy would have been adopted in Romania right after the revolution in 1989. A lower percentage, namely 21.4% think that it would have been worse, while 21% don’t think this would have made a difference for Romania.

The Inscop survey was carried out between November 27 and December 2, on sample of over 1,000 people, at the request of Adevarul newspaper.
