How much alcohol do Romanians drink?

A Romanian drinks an average of 2.2 liters of alcoholic beverages a month, especially beer and wine, according to data from the National Statistics Institute - INS.

In 2014, a Romanian drank an average of 4.8 liters of mineral water and other soft drinks per month, 1.1 liters of beer, 0.9 liters of wine, and 0.2 liters of plum brandy and natural spirits, reports local Agerpres.

When compared to 2011, the mineral water and other soft drinks consumption was 4% higher in 2014, the beer consumption increased by 5.8%, and wine consumption went up by 2.5%.

In 2014, the total consumption expenditure amounted to RON 1,637 (some EUR 368) per month/household, on average. About 7.7% of this sum was spent on alcohol and cigarettes while 40% was allocated for food and soft drinks.

Between 2011 and 2014, the food and soft drinks have held the highest share in the total consumption expenditure – 40%. However, the number decreased by 1.7 percentage points in 2014 compared to 2011.
