Connection of wind farms to Romanian electricity grid requires EUR 500 mln investments

09 November 2011

Connecting wind farms to Romania's grid would require investments of around EUR 500 million from Romanian electricity transporter Transelectrica, and the company does not have these funds, according to its representatives, quoted by Mediafax newswire. The company has recently slowed down the rate of offering contracts that allow wind parks to connect to the grid, to ensure the safety of the electricity network in the country.

Transelectrica is currently discussing with the country's Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) to change the legislation and attract investments required to upgrade the grid for the wind farm connection.

So far, Transelectrica has signed contracts to connect 8,300 MW of wind parks to the country's grid, twice as much as the energy system could integrate, just because there are no legal ways to stop the system that allows wind parks to connect to the grid.
