Former Romanian health minister, appointed central bank’s deputy governor

16 May 2017

Former health minister Eugen Nicolaescu, who is supported by the National Liberal Party (PNL), received yesterday the approval of the Parliament’s budget-finance committees to be appointed deputy governor of Romania’s National Bank (BNR).

Nicolaescu, 62, is an economist who was health minister in the Tariceanu Government (2007-2008), as well as the USL Government led by Victor Ponta (2012-2014).

He graduated from the Academy of Economic Studies (ASE) in Bucharest in 1982. Since 2001, Nicolaescu has been a PhD candidate in economics at ASE Bucharest.

PNL appointed Eugen Nicolaescu as deputy general-secretary in the Finance Minister between 1999 and 2000, and interim president of the National Securities Commission (CNVM) in July 2000. He resigned from the last position.

The office of BNR deputy governor previously belonged to PNL and was filled by Bogdan Olteanu, a former president of the Chamber of Deputies. The position remained vacant after Olteanu resigned in August 2016 amid a corruption investigation related to his previous activity. PSD initially claimed this position but after negotiations with PNL, the social democrats gave up this office.
