Electricity wholesale price up 50% in Romania, if green energy removed

05 February 2015

The electricity wholesale price in Romania could increase by 50% if the production mix no longer included renewable energy, said Emil Calota, vice president of Romania’s energy regulation agency ANRE.

The renewable energy last year had a 10% share in Romania's total electricity production.

The ANRE simulations show that green energy removal would increase the wholesale price of one MWh by EUR 20, from EUR 40 to EUR 60, which would severely impact final consumers.

The final consumer now pays about EUR 8 per MWh for green certificates, over the EUR 40 electricity price, which is way less than EUR 20, Calota explained.

"If we compare EUR 8 with EUR 20, we find that maintaining this sector is clearly favorable, economically speaking,” Calota added, cited by local Agerpres.
