City hall employees in Romania plan general strike at the end of the month

03 October 2016

The city hall and county council employees in Romania could start a general strike on October 31, for an indefinite period, according to a statement from the National Federation of Unions in Public Administration (FNSA).

The unions took this decision after Deputy Prime Minister Vasile Dincu failed to solve the employees’ claims by the end of September, as promised. Thus, FNSA is now gathering signatures for a general strike.

Some of FNSA’s claims include food norms for all employees in the local public administration (where the budget resources allow it), given that some employees get this right and others don’t, and holiday vouchers. According to the unions, these compensatory measures would reduce wage disparities between employees who work in the local public administration and the other state employees.

The members of the National Federation of Unions in Public Administration (FNSA) previously started a series of protests in early July this year, and planned a general strike for July 19. However, they gave up the idea of the strike following negotiations with Deputy Prime Minister Vasile Dincu.
