Christmas menu in Romania: 7.3 mln 'cozonac' cakes, 1.5 mln pigs and 160 mln eggs

Romanians eat during Christmas and New Year over 7.3 million sweet breads (traditionaly named cozonac  (in picture)- or cozonaci  - plural), 1.5 million pigs and more than 160 million eggs, as well as drink about 50 million liters of wine, according to estimates provided by producers and processors quoted by Agerpres.

When bought from the store, a cozonac cake is priced between RON 5 and RON 40 (EUR 1.1 to EUR 8.9). in December, Romanians eat ten time smore cozonac cakes than dring a regular month, according to statistics.

During the Christmas period, more than 1.5 million pigs are killed, around 30% of all the animals slaughtered in a year, 450,000 -500,000 of which come from commercial farms, while the rest are from households.

"In December, egg sales usually increase by about 50% compared to a typical month, namely from 110-120 million eggs to more than 160 million poultry eggs sold," said Ilie Van, President of the Poultry Breeders Union in Romania.

In terms of wine, Romanians go red for Christmas, and drink 50% more wine than during a regular month.
