Zero VAT on bio products could turn Romania into the largest exporter of eco food

28 April 2014

Romania could become the largest exporter of bio and traditional food if the authorities decide to apply zero VAT on eco products, which would also become more accessible to Romanians themselves, said Dan Matei Agathon, the president of the Tourism Employers Federation, quoted by Agerpres.

Small farmers grow bio products, but their costs are higher than those for large producers, and the quality of the food is better, so canceling the VAT altogether for these products is a needed step for this growing market, Agathon said. This could also help promote Romanian bio and traditional products abroad, where such products are already in trend. Romania exports most of its production from farming – 80 percent – but as raw ingredients, instead of processed products.
